"Phantom X" is an American power metal band currently on their third release "This is War". I have to say I am not really familiar with the band's previous works but coming across this amazing album cover (reminded me of "Stryper- To Hell with the Devil") together with the fact that the album is released by "Perris Records", intrigued me too much to leave this release on the shelf.
It is fair to say that over the past few months one has come across a good number of ambitious power metal albums including "Iron Mask", "Dream Evil", "Gamma Ray" and "Freedom Call". Never the less, "Phantom X" latest album stands up to the competition; "This is war" may not be the catchiest, fastest or most aggressive album amongst the latest power metal releases yet it has the quality of a CLASSIC album.
By the time the first song "This is war" kicks in, you know the band is not set to impress, just deliver a solid classic-metal attack through the listener's stereo and they succeed at that! Yes "Phantom X" are technically proficient as well as effective songwriters, still their focus is on directness; naturally any unnecessary progressions or musical experimentations are left behind for the sake of "This is war" being as straightforward as possible.
Despite the flawless production, (a must for any post-2000 album) the material on `This is war" could date sometime during the mid 80s when the international Power metal scene was building momentum. Really, there is no other way of putting it; `This is war', `Forever midnight', `Chaos in paradise', `Twilight', `Cries in the night' make direct reference to the earliest power metal works and what is more important is that it sounds authentic and unforced.
I believe the new "Phantom X" album is the American response to the previously mentioned European power metal bands and their latest works. For anyone hooked to the early Power metal sound "This is war" is a must; plus if you have bought any of the previously mentioned bands/albums, "Phantom X" will unquestionably give you more of the stuff you enjoy.
